Burnout has a PR problem. Most people picture it as a dramatic breakdown — the moment someone finally can't get out of bed. But in reality, burnout is usually much quieter than that. It sneaks up on you. And by the time you recognize it, you've often been running on empty for months.
Here are seven signs that might indicate you're more burned out than you realize.
1. You're exhausted even after rest
You sleep eight hours and wake up tired. You take a vacation and come back feeling no different. When rest stops restoring you, that's a signal your nervous system is in a chronic state of depletion.
2. Everything feels harder than it should
Tasks that used to feel easy now feel monumental. Decisions that should be simple feel paralyzing. This cognitive heaviness is a hallmark of burnout.
3. You've lost your sense of meaning
Work that once felt purposeful now feels hollow. You're going through the motions but the 'why' has disappeared. This emotional detachment is one of the most painful aspects of burnout.
4. You're more irritable or reactive than usual
Small things set you off. You snap at people you love. Your patience has evaporated. This is your nervous system telling you it has no more capacity.
5. You've stopped taking care of yourself
Exercise, healthy eating, time with friends — all the things that used to feel good have quietly dropped off. When we're burned out, self-care is often the first thing to go.
6. You feel disconnected from your body
You're living entirely in your head. You've stopped noticing how you feel physically. You might even feel numb.
7. You can't remember the last time you felt genuinely excited about something
Not just content — genuinely lit up. If you're struggling to remember, that's worth paying attention to.
What to do
Burnout isn't a character flaw. It's a signal. It's your body and mind telling you that something needs to change — not just your schedule, but often your relationship with yourself.
Recovery from burnout isn't just about rest. It's about reconnecting with what matters, rebuilding your relationship with your own needs, and learning to operate from a place of sustainability rather than depletion.
This is exactly the work I do with clients. If any of this resonates, I'd love to connect.
